The Michigan Senate took a discouraging step this afternoon in direct conflict with their long-standing support of Michigan’s hospitality industry.

LANSING, May 8, 2008 – A bill that would ban smoking in workplaces throughout the state passed the Michigan Senate today by a vote of 25 to 12.

A bill that would ban smoking in workplaces throughout the state -- including bars and restaurants -- passed today in the Michigan House of Representatives by a vote of 56-46.

01-Oct-07 [Member Alert] Last-Minute Deal Stops Government Shutdown
The threat of a shutdown of all Michigan’s non-essential services was put on hold for at least 30 days early this morning when the Michigan Legislature passed a series of tax bills and reform plans. The progress was enough to convince the Governor to sign a 30-day Continuation budget, giving legislators another month to finalize details of the state’s finances for the fiscal year.

Due to the ongoing State Budget impasse in Lansing, it is possible that all unessential government services could be halted on Monday, Oct. 1. The state legislature and other government officials are expected to work over the weekend in hopes of coming to an agreement that would avoid a shutdown.

A bill that would ban smoking in workplaces throughout the state – including bars and restaurants – passed today in the House of Representatives Commerce Committee. Today’s hearing was the third and final committee meeting on the issue and will now be discussed on the full House Floor.

13-Jun-07 Smoking Ban Bill Remains in Committee
A bill that would ban smoking in workplaces throughout the state – including bars and restaurants – was discussed today in the House of Representatives Commerce Committee. After hearing some testimony, Committee Chair Andy Meisner (D-Ferndale) adjourned without voting on the bill and indicated another hearing would be scheduled in two weeks.
